The mission of Black Ankh Designs™ is to provide quality, fun, and innovative clothing to women who appreciate individuality. Black Ankh creates clothing for “trend-setters,” women who are open to embracing color, distinction, and themselves. Clothing is a form of expression, and Black Ankh's wants to be your "fashion statement of you."
Black Ankh is passionate about introducing a perspective on fashion that reinforces the "universe within oneself. "It is my hope that you will be inspired to express yourself by wearing yourself ... a reflection of your community, homeland, and spirit."
"Fashion is wearing oneself"
Black Ankh is not main stream, and seeks to unite art, fashion, and diversity. There is a tendency in the fashion industry to offer trends in sizes and cuts that compliment specific body types. Black Ankh seeks to offer a "different version" of fashion to different versions of beautiful women. Our couture designs are upscale, signature clothing that is literally wearable art ... for every body.
About the Designer
La-Rae Subay, a "Georgia Peach" from Athens, GA, is the founder / designer of Black Ankh Designs LLC. Self taught in this industry, she has a Masters degree in Education, a B.A. in Psychology, and is currently seeking her Masters in Business Administration to ensure the powerful and consistent impact and growth of Black Ankh.
La-Rae’s trend-setting creativity is inspired by African culture. She is deeply moved by the spiritual energy of the continent and the breathtaking fabric creations produced. Sewing to musical favorites in the 4-6 am hours result in powerful, artistic, and wearable motifs. “My designs are embraced by individuals who are open to diversity, and open to wearing fun, radiant garments created/blended with authentic African fabrics.” Ms. Subay’s signature is not only her display of creative innovation and colorful blends, but also her skill in working with mud cloth.
The Meaning of Black Ankh
Black, La-Rae's favorite color, represents the unstoppable power of the Universe. The Egyptian Ankh, La-Rae's favorite symbol, represents eternal life and the balance of masculine and feminine energies (like the Yin and Yang). Together they define Black Ankh to mean "Universal Life" with an emphasis on each person's Unique-versal Life.
Accomplishments
La-Rae designed and constructed a Panel prototype for FloppySeat, the creator and manufacturer of the innovative shopping cart covers for infants/toddlers. The Black Ankh clothing line has been featured in Phoenix Fashion Week's 2006 Emerging Designer show, and Ms. Subay was one of ten designers featured in the 2006 Diaspora Showcase Africa Fashion Show. Ms. Subay's Diaspora design is currently in the collection of Martha Samara, wife of Noah Samara, who created satellite radio and pioneered XM radio.
